Marrakech to Agadir: Private Transfer, Coach or Grand Taxi?

You are in Marrakech, or about to land there, and the next stop is Agadir: the airport for a flight home, a hotel on the bay, or a surf house up the coast in Taghazout. There is no passenger train on this corridor, so the choice is between three kinds of road transport: a scheduled coach with CTM or Supratours, a long-distance grand taxi, or a private car booked in advance. We drive the private option every week in both directions, and we are going to be straight about where the other two are the better call.

Three ways to get from Marrakech to Agadir, and when each one wins

The coach is the cheapest way to make this journey and we are not going to pretend otherwise. CTM and Supratours both run air-conditioned services between Marrakech and Agadir on scheduled departures, station to station, with a published fare paid at the counter. Check the current timetable directly with the operator, because it changes, and check the departure point too, since both leave from their own stations rather than from your hotel. At the Agadir end you still have to get from the coach station to your bed, with your bags, at whatever hour you arrive.

The long-distance grand taxi is the middle option. It is a shared car that leaves its rank when every seat is sold, or a private one if you pay for the whole vehicle, and the fare is agreed at the kerb rather than printed anywhere. It is cheaper than us, it can be quicker than waiting for the next coach, and it is a perfectly normal way for Moroccans to travel between the two cities. It is also the option with the most variables: how long the car takes to fill, what the boot will take, whether a board bag is a yes, and there are no child seats.

A private transfer removes the variables and charges for the privilege. One vehicle, yours alone, from the door of your riad or the arrivals hall at Marrakech Menara to the exact address in Agadir, at the time you choose, at a price fixed in writing before you travel. Where it wins is not comfort, although it is more comfortable. It wins on arithmetic and on timing: a group of four or more sharing one vehicle price, an arrival or departure that no coach serves, luggage a hold will not take, a child who needs a seat, or a flight out of Agadir that cannot absorb a missed departure.

What a private transfer from Marrakech to Agadir costs

The cost per head falls as the group grows: four people in the SUV are each paying a quarter of €150, and eight in the minivan are splitting €200. And nobody is counting your bags at the kerb. How the pick-up works in Marrakech

Where we meet you depends on where you are staying, and it matters more in Marrakech than in most cities. In Hivernage, Gueliz and the Palmeraie the streets take a car, so the driver comes to the door at the agreed time. Inside the Medina and the Kasbah most riads sit down a derb that a car cannot enter, so we meet you at the nearest gate or the entrance to your derb, and the driver waits there with you. Give us the riad's name when you book and we agree the exact meeting point by WhatsApp the evening before, rather than working it out in the morning with your cases on the cobbles.

A practical tip for the Medina: ask your riad the night before to walk you to the gate, or to send someone with the bags. Most riads do this as a matter of course, and it turns the one awkward part of leaving the old town into a short walk with someone who knows the way.

If you are landing at Marrakech Menara airport and going straight to Agadir, the pick-up works like every airport pick-up we do. We track the flight in real time, the driver is inside arrivals holding a board with your name on it, and 60 minutes of free waiting is included from the moment you land, so passport control and baggage are not something to hurry through. The road: 245 km, about 2h 45min, one stop

Marrakech to Agadir is 245 km and takes about 2h 45min on the motorway. The road leaves the plain around Marrakech, climbs through a long mountain section at the western end of the High Atlas, and then drops into the Souss valley, where the light changes and the Atlantic is somewhere ahead of you. It is a good drive and a long one, and we will not pretend it is a short hop.

One comfort stop is included and you choose when it happens. Say at the start if you want to stop somewhere in particular, or if you would rather push on and stop late, and the driver plans around it. The car is air conditioned, there is bottled water, and nobody else is being collected on the way. The 2h 45min on our route page is the journey itself; a long break at the stop, or a slow exit from Marrakech in traffic, adds to it, which is why we suggest a pick-up time with a margin when there is a flight at the other end.

At the Agadir end the drop-off is to the door: the reception of a hotel on the beach strip, an apartment with a street name and a landmark, or the departures kerb at Al Massira. Luggage, surfboards and child seats

Luggage is included in the price and there is no per-bag charge. What limits you is the boot. A sedan takes 2 large bags, the SUV 3, the van 4, the minivan 6, and the minibus is built for a group's luggage. Those figures sit next to the passenger counts, vehicle by vehicle, on the fleet page, and they are honest figures rather than optimistic ones. A family with big cases, a pushchair and a travel cot should be looking at the van or the minivan rather than the sedan, and we would rather say that now than at the kerb.

Surfboards are carried at no surcharge on this route, and a fair share of the people who book Marrakech to the coast are carrying them. Tell us how many board bags at booking, because it decides the vehicle, and it is settled in writing before you travel rather than negotiated with a driver who has just seen the bag. A wet, sandy board bag is expected rather than a problem.

Baby and booster seats are free on request. Give us the children's ages when you book and the right seat is fitted in the car before the driver reaches you, not handed over for you to install on the pavement. Neither the coach nor a grand taxi can offer this, and for a journey of this length it is the single most common reason families choose a private car.

Paying, deposits and cancellation

You can pay by card online through Stripe, or in cash to the driver in euros or dirham at the end of the journey. Online you can pay in full or leave a 30% deposit and settle the balance with the driver. A card fee of 3.9% plus €0.30 applies to whatever part you pay online, which is why plenty of people book with the deposit and pay the rest in cash. You will not be asked to pay twice: the driver knows exactly what is outstanding.

Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the pick-up time, as published in our terms. If your plans are still moving, book with the deposit rather than paying in full, and keep the details flexible until the day before.

Dirham is a closed currency and you generally cannot buy it before you fly, which is exactly why we take euros. If the trip ends at Agadir Airport you do not need to keep a pile of dirham back for the driver.

Continuing to Taghazout, Tamraght or Essaouira

If your bed is on the coast north of Agadir rather than in the city, say so when you book and we run one car straight through from Marrakech to the village. It is the road on our Taghazout to Marrakech page driven in the other direction, listed there at 255 km and about 3 hours, and the driver takes you into Taghazout, Tamraght or Aourir to the address itself rather than leaving you on the main road above the village. Essaouira is a different journey and we will not pretend it is on the way. From Agadir, our Agadir Airport to Essaouira route runs 175 km up the Atlantic coast in about 2h 15min, from €130 per vehicle, through argan country, with a drop at the medina gate nearest your riad. When the coach is the better choice

We would rather say this here than have you feel sold to afterwards. If you are one or two people, travelling in daylight, with a suitcase each and a day that can absorb a fixed departure time, the coach is a good, cheap, comfortable way to make this journey and we would not argue with it. The fare difference against a private car is significant for a couple, and CTM and Supratours run this corridor well.

The case for us is narrower and more specific than the coach being bad. It is a group of four or more splitting one price. It is a flight that lands in Marrakech at an hour no coach serves, or a flight out of Agadir that cannot wait for the next departure. It is a child seat, a board bag, a pushchair and a travel cot, or a grandparent who should not be climbing off a coach at a station and into a taxi negotiation. It is a riad in the Medina where a car at the gate at the agreed time is worth more than the fare saved. If none of that is you, take the coach, and check the timetable with the operator before you plan around it.
