Marrakech to Essaouira: Private Transfer, Coach or Day Trip?

Marrakech to Essaouira is 185 km and about 2h 45min by road. A private transfer with Just Luxury Transfers costs from €120 for a sedan, €130 for an SUV or €150 for a van, per vehicle, the same in either direction. The coach is cheaper for one or two people, but it runs to a fixed timetable.

You are in Marrakech and want a day, or a night, in Essaouira, the walled Atlantic port 185 km to the west. There is no train on this route, so the choice is a coach, a taxi or a private car, and a day trip only works if the times line up. This guide gives the distances, the prices and the cost per person by group size, and it says plainly where the coach beats us.

How do you get from Marrakech to Essaouira?

Marrakech to Essaouira is 185 km and takes about 2h 45min by car. There is no train. The options are a coach, a taxi or a private transfer. The coach is the cheapest, but it runs from stations near Marrakech railway station, not from the main Gare Routiere, and it keeps to a fixed timetable.

Marrakech to Essaouira by coach: times, stations and price

With no train, the coach is the public option. At the time of writing, CTM reportedly runs one daily departure at about 08:30, with a return at around 17:00, for around 105 MAD. Supratours charges around 100 to 125 MAD. The journey takes around 3 hours. Both stations are near Marrakech railway station, not at the main Gare Routiere, which is easy to get wrong when you give an address to a taxi driver. If the CTM times hold, a coach day trip runs like this: leave at 08:30, arrive around 11:30, take the 17:00 back, and you have roughly five and a half hours in Essaouira. It works, but it fixes the whole day around two departures, and a missed return leaves you to find another way back.

Taxi from Marrakech to Essaouira: what to ask before you agree

We do not have a reliable published fare for a taxi on this route, so we will not quote one. Figures online vary, and a negotiated price depends on the day, the car and the hour. If you go this way, settle four things before you get in: whether the car is shared or yours alone, the total price, whether bags are included, and exactly where in Essaouira you will be dropped. A 185 km ride is a long time to discover a misunderstanding.

What a private transfer from Marrakech to Essaouira costs

Our prices are per vehicle, not per person, and fixed before you travel. There is no surcharge for night arrivals, luggage or surfboards. Group size: what each person pays

Pricing by the vehicle changes the sum as soon as there is more than one of you. The table divides each fare by the number of people in the group, using the vehicle that fits them.

On the figures we have, the coach is the cheaper seat at every group size, at around 100 to 125 MAD each way, and we will not pretend otherwise. What the car buys is the timing, the pick-up at your door, and the luggage space. It makes most sense from three people up, where each pays 40 euros or less and the departure time is yours to choose.

Day trip from Marrakech to Essaouira: how to plan it

The road alone is 2h 45min each way, so 5h 30min of driving. As an example, leave Marrakech at 08:00, arrive around 10:45, set the return pick-up for 17:00, and you have about six hours in Essaouira before the drive back. Those times are an illustration, not a schedule we run. If you can spare a night, the sum improves: you drive 2h 45min once each way and spend two full days in town.

With a private car there are two ways to do the day. Book two one way transfers, the outward leg in the morning and the return at the hour you choose, which costs two times the one way fare. Or ask for one driver who stays with you all day, which is a different product, quoted on request, with no published price. Essaouira to Marrakech, and on to Agadir or Taghazout

The return is priced the same as the outward leg. For an evening journey, book the pick-up for the time you want and allow for the 2h 45min drive plus whatever margin you need at the other end, especially if there is a flight. If you finish at Marrakech airport, tell us the flight number when you book and we confirm the fare and the pick-up time before you pay.

Luggage, child seats, payment and cancellation

A sedan takes 2 large bags, the SUV 3, the van 4 and the minivan 6, and the minibus is built for a group's luggage. Surfboards and luggage carry no surcharge. Baby and booster seats are free on request, so give us the children's ages when you book.

You can pay by card online, pay a 30% deposit online and the balance to the driver, or pay cash to the driver in euros or dirham. A card fee of 3.9% plus 30 cents applies to whatever part you pay online. Dirham is a closed currency and you generally cannot buy it before you fly. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pick-up, and every website booking receives a booking voucher by email.

When the coach is the better choice

If you are one or two people with light luggage and a day that fits a fixed departure, take the coach. It is far cheaper, it is a normal way to make this trip, and the stations near Marrakech railway station are easy enough once you know which ones to ask for. The private car earns its price in other cases: a group splitting one fare, an early start, big luggage, children who need a seat, an evening return at a time you choose, or a pick-up from the door of your hotel or riad.
